Artist Statement:
My work is inspired by the historical significance of the landscape and the human condition in relation to location. I seek to investigate and chronicle narratives through the presence of animals for role playing within neglected, makeshift architectural facades, exposing the concrete and brick structures that are influenced by Brutalism. The paintings and sculptures combine for diorama like experience of fragmented landscape shrines that create a visual journey to foster a spiritual or uncompromising connection with nature within environmental mayhem.
There are no found objects in my work. My process of casting and carving objects is a ritual of material transformation. Casting objects allows me to capture subtle details of the original object, emphasizing texture, exaggeration and repetition to subvert expectations. This process sometimes adds a new surreal aesthetic and depth to evoke emotions and awareness to the alienation and tension of the familiar and unfamiliar while maintaining a sense of humor and humility.”
Artist Statement for Paintings:
I strive to achieve self-conscious pictorial experiments of modernism and an awareness of optical phenomena, optical expansion and contraction of forms in light. I attempt to capture the fleeting effects of sunlight, the impressions and reawakening of consciousness of a scene. Through the use of the technique of broken color, the goal is to achieve the actual sensation of light itself in a painting, a shimmering controlled chaos of brutal brushwork to dissect and deconstruct light and space.
The visual content strives to breakdown the familiarity of the perspective and simplicity of geometric form and plan within rational existence in space; to create a distorted expressionist disharmony of architectural and natural perception.
My work is to expose the mistake, the thrill, the accidental and spontaneous illustration of moments that make up life. To create a sense of tension between the “moment” and the continuity of “time” that leads us to the fragmenting of these moments. Through this process I seek to run all the separate moments into a linear continuity of truth.
